He leaned back in the worn armchair, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the living room. The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, chasing away the autumn chill. He stretched, a contented sigh escaping his lips as he surveyed his surroundings. The familiar scent of pipe tobacco and old books comforted him. He was lost in the pages of a well-loved novel, the world outside fading into a distant hum.

A phone call, breaking the quietude, disrupted his reverie. It was his sister, her voice unusually strained. “Dad wants to let go of the pocket watch,” she said softly. “The one Grandpa gave him.”

He closed the book slowly, the leather cover cool against his fingertips. The watch, a family heirloom, sat in his father’s study, a tangible link to generations past. His chest felt constricted. "Sell it? But it's..." he began, his voice trailing off, unable to articulate the sudden disquiet that had settled over him.
